TTL DETAILS
The TTL value of an IP packet represents the maximum number of IP routers
that the packet can go through before being thrown away. In current
practice you can expect each router in the Internet to decrement the TTL
field by exactly one.

The TCP/IP specification states that the TTL field for TCP packets should
be set to 60, but many systems use smaller values (4.3 BSD uses 30, 4.2
used 15).

The maximum possible value of this field is 255, and most Unix systems
set the TTL field of ICMP ECHO_REQUEST packets to 255. This is why you
will find you can ``ping'' some hosts, but not reach them with telnet(1)
or ftp(1).

In normal operation ping prints the ttl value from the packet it
receives. When a remote system receives a ping packet, it can do one of
three things with the TTL field in its response:

o Not change it; this is what Berkeley Unix systems did before the
4.3BSD-Tahoe release. In this case the TTL value in the received
packet will be 255 minus the number of routers in the round-trip
path.

o Set it to 255; this is what current Berkeley Unix systems do. In
this case the TTL value in the received packet will be 255 minus the
number of routers in the path from the remote system to the pinging
host.

o Set it to some other value. Some machines use the same value for
ICMP packets that they use for TCP packets, for example either 30 or
60. Others may use completely wild values.

Dal mio computer facendo ping verso la mia LAN ottengo:

ping verso un macosx:

ping verso un win2k:

64 bytes from 192.x.x.x: icmp_seq=0 ttl=128 time=0.57

ping verso un sito esterno:
[rafal:~] rafalwis% ping www.macitynet.it
PING macitynet.it (209.197.112.220): 56 data bytes
64 bytes from 209.197.112.220: icmp_seq=0 ttl=55 time=211.707 ms
64 bytes from 209.197.112.220: icmp_seq=1 ttl=55 time=207.196 ms

Provato anche io ed ottengo da macosx server ttl64 e valori intorno allo 0.3. Pimgando WinXP, sempre sulla stessa LAN, ottengo ttl128 e valori pressoché identici.
Pingando macity ottengo ttl46 e intorno ai 156ms.

Mi sto informando se un valore così basso potrebbe influire sulla capacità di trasferimento dei files.

Inoltre, già che ci sono... su Jaguar come si possono modificare i settaggi della scheda di rete? (10/100 half/full duplex)

Certamente
basta andare in "Preferenze Network" Scegliere "Mostra Ethernet integrata" e poi cliccare su "Ethernet"

Da li c'e' un bel bottone "Configura" da dove puoi scegliere "Manualmente" e fare tutti i danni che vuoi ;-)

Ragazzi,

capisco la fretta nel rispondere, ma io parlavo di Jaguar e non di Panther. Su quest&#39;ultimo so benissimo che esiste un menu &#34;Ethernet&#34; dove poter modificare le impostazioni della scheda di rete ma su Jaguar?

E poi, la domanda iniziale l&#39;avevo posta perch&egrave; con un server Mac Os X 10.2.8 il passaggio dei file &egrave; molto lento, &egrave; collegato ad uno switch INTEL, inoltre molto spesso l&#39;applicazione VNC si chiude improvvisamente e non posso connettermi in remoto al sistema.

Se qualcuno pu&ograve; darmi una mano, ne sarei molto grato,

Cavo marcio? Interferenze? Provato un collegamento diretto bypassando l&#39;hardware Intel? Provato a cambiare cavo? Il problema si verifica solo con il server? Potrebbe avere una scheda di rete prossima al cedimento?
