I've done some research on this as a result of a client's requirement to remove AppleTalk from their network. This is not a Photoshop-only issue. When printing to HP LaserJets from a Mac using LPR you should always specify the 'BINPS' queue (Binary PostScript) or you will likely get garbage output. Older LaserJets don't even support this, and newer ones require up to date JetDirect card firmware to support the 'BINPS' queue. I believe that the firmware can only be updated from a PC or UNIX box. (The HP JetDirect Download Manager can find and update all HP JetDirect cards on your network with the latest firmware available. It is quite slick.)
While printing using ASCII is a workaround, it will be slower because the spool files are much larger. HP's support site has documentation on this.

So far, HP's are the only printers that seem to have this issue. The odd thing is that most HP LaserJet printers can handle binary encoded postscript over AppleTalk, but if it arrives over LPR, they just assume it is not binary. PCs seem to be able to print to the BINPS queue okay. So if that can be used for both platforms, I don't know why HP doesn't just make it the default queue.

Unfortunately, AppleTalk is still faster than printing over LPR. I don't know why this is true. PCs seem to print very fast over LPR. My testing shows that it is faster to get a page out of the printer from a Mac by going through a Windows print server than it is to print LPR direct from the Mac. And that includes printing, not just spooling. Seems like the LPR communication from the Mac to the printer needs improvement. And Mac OS X isn't any faster at this than Mac OS 9.

Apple does offer some explanation in an old article titled "LaserWriter 8: LPR Printing May Be Slower Than AppleTalk", but PCs don't seem to have a speed problem.

I'm hoping that the upcoming CUPS technology Apple licensed will address the speed issue and other limitations of LPR.

Non credo sia un problema di rete, ma di impostazioni sballate, forse anzi probabilmente anche a causa mia...adesso provo un'altro paio di cose, dopodichè credo che piallerò tutto sul Cube e reinstallerò Panther, da 10.3 a 10.3.6, il Client del software gestionale, Office2004, la cartella virtuale che utilizziamo in comune nella rete e quant'altro necessario...

Vi aggiorno della situazione essendo riuscito a capire dove stava l'inghippo...
Come anche suggeritomi da altri utenti in altro forum, la cosa strana era riferita al fatto che cercasse un host di collegamento...come se dovesse passare da un router...ma io non ho un router...
Smanettando nelle preferenze di sistema, in Network mi sono accorto che erano settate, erroneamente ovviamente, gli indirizzi di un router, con dominio di ricerca di FAstWeb...probabilmente erano i settaggi rimasti li ed impostati dall'assistenza di Milano nel fare l'aggiornamento del Cube...
Resettati questi parametri ho provato a stampare, da word, da text edit, dal client di MAcHotel...tutto ok...
Tutto bene quel che finisce bene...
