Il nuovo Mac Pro: i primi commenti

Recommended Posts

More info on OEM Mac Pro Memory - Further to the discussion on Mac Pro Memory (and its large heatsink) - PowerMax's Mac Pro Take-Apart has photos of the OEM memory modules and riser card. Their Mac Pro had OEM (512MB) modules and the memory in the photo has a Nanya label. (Apple often uses more than one source for Memory so not all Mac Pros may have Nanya memory.) The last digits of the P/N was blurred in photo of the label, but I think the full P/N was NT512T72U89A5BD-3C. Here's a page of Nanya specs on 512MB to 2GB FB dimms, that includes that module P/N. The PDF download at Nanya mentions it has a CAS latency of 5 and includes overtemperature detection and alert.

Page 25 of the PDF shows the module/package dimensions but doesn't reflect the same (tall/finned) heatsink as on the Apple shipped modules. (Yesterday news had a copy of Apple's memory note that says a special heatsink was used to require less airflow and minimize fan speed.)

As mentioned yesterday, some vendor's Mac Pro memory pages like Crucial's show basically flat heatsinks on their FB-Dimm photo, although they cost less than RAM with larger heatsinks like OWC's Mac Pro memory. If any Mac Pro owner uses FB-Dimms that do not have large heatsinks, let me know if you notice higher fan speeds than with the OEM memory. (I'm personally not that sensitive to fan speeds/noise within reason, but I lost count of the total number of G5 tower owner mails over the years about fan noise/speeds, often due to addon cards (PCI bay fan speed was determined by power load, not temperature), power manager/settings/OS X update quirks, etc...)
