Quanta strada ha fatto il Wi-Fi dall’estate del 1999, quando Apple introduceva sul mercato, per prima, AirPort… allora non c’era nessuno standard ma l’opera innovatrice di Apple ha segnato un solco storico.
Il marchio “Wi-Fi CERTIFIED” è ora apposto su oltre novecento prodotti che si poggiano su uno o su una combinazione tra questi standard prevalenti: IEEE 802.11a, IEEE 802.11b (AirPort), IEEE 802.11g (AirPort Extreme) e il sistema di sicurezza WPA.
Ben 116 aziende sono protagoniste di questa cavalcata e “la domanda di prodotti Wi-Fi certificati è in forte crescita”, come dice il direttore di Wi-Fi Alliance, Frank Hanzlik che prosegue così: “l’interoperabilità è fondamentale e il supporto di WPA – Wi-Fi Protected Access è ormai richiestissimo”.
I laboratori di analisi di San Jose (California, USA), Winnersh (UK), Taipei (Taiwan) e Tokio (Giappone) testano ogni periferica e i rigorosi controlli non permettono a tutti i candidati di trasformarsi in prodotti “Wi-Fi CERTIFIED”.
